Can I have volatile alcoholic ex removed from house if he's not paid rent?

Ex and I split up recently, we have a rental house. Notice went in and we are due to leave mid December. Things have been a bit tense but fairly amicable up until now.

Ex is an alcoholic and is continually drinking all evening and most nights when he's not working. He sits in a separate sitting room to me. He has not previously been violent or aggressive. We are splitting up due to the impact his alcoholism has on the relationship and essentially living separate lives.

Last night he was drunk as usual and we had a serious argument. It is the first time he has shown aggression to me. He didn't hit me but squared up to me, put his hands on my chest, raised the iron at me and stood over me frothing and spitting while shouting. I shouted back and didn't back down but then left the room and shut myself in the bedroom. He stayed up all night playing loud music, slamming doors, trashed the kitchen and sent me abusive messages that I ignored.

Ex has terrible credit and earns a lot less than me, so I pay over 2/3rds of the rent and he pays me a standing order each week for his share of rent and bills. I pay the landlord. the tenancy however is in joint names. I've just seen he didn't pay me on friday when it was due, and he stated last night he wouldn't be paying me any share of the rent or bills for the duration of the rest of our notice.

My question is, is there any way I can use his non payment of rent to get him out the house before then? I suspect not because of the joint tenancy? And if he becomes aggressive or a nuisance and I phone the police, can they remove him from the house? I really don't want to as he is in a regulated profession so any police involvement will flag up to his regulator and may affect his career but I will if I have to.

I do have somewhere safe I can go if I need to at short notice, however I am the one who is paying the bills and its all my furniture etc in the house so I don't think its fair that I am the one who has to leave.

I would call the police- he doesn’t care whether or not he hurts you so don’t worry about his career. Your safety is most important.
