Trampoline in back garden

jaychops · 04/11/2018 10:51

Before I speak to a solicitor, I wondered if anyone knows whether legally our neighbours can make us move a trampoline at the end of the garden which is next to the fence/boundary to their garden, or has anyone been in a similar situation?

Of course we don't want to create any tensions and bear in mind their right to privacy etc but there isn't anywhere else we can move it to unfortunately.

Ooooh. Tbh, MN tend to be very anti trampoline. I don’t think you will get very helpful comments on here.
It might be best to give CAB a call.

jaychops · 04/11/2018 10:54

Thanks for the heads up Daphne!

Grin I might be wrong, it’s just that most AIBU threads about trampolines descend in to the typical MN froth.

BentNeckLady · 04/11/2018 10:59

Could you tac some black fabric along the outside of the net? That’s why I did when out trampoline was right next to the boundary.

jaychops · 04/11/2018 11:04

Good idea @bentnecklady. Will look into that as an option.

Yes I posted in here rather than AIBU to hopefully get some objective advice about where we might stand should things escalate rather than personal opinions!

What's the neighbours objections?

purplecorkheart · 04/11/2018 11:08

Is it the noise or lack of privacy that they arw objecting to?

jaychops · 04/11/2018 11:14

We are pre-empting a complaint at present! So just wanting to be prepared. I do suspect they might complain about the noise but even if it could go elsewhere in the garden it wouldn't make a difference as our garden isn't massive. Our adjacent neighbours already have a trampoline at the end of their garden, which is also bordering with the neighbours in reference, but their garden is slightly staggered, although same effect if it's the noise they are bothered about. We aren't a noisy family, our children are 4 and 1 (I know they will grow!) but we are not a family who spend hours and hours in the garden.

Check if the trampoline is squeeking when the kids job. You may need to oil the springs on it. Could you look into getting it sunk into the ground so when the kids jump they are not looking over the fence. You could also attach a black panel on the netting. At least if they go to a solicitor you have made reasonable ajustments.

pinkyredrose · 04/11/2018 11:20

Why are you pre empting a complaint, what have they said to you?

Tbh if i had to put up with 2 lots of someone elses kids + trampolines disturbing me i think I'd go spare.

EggysMom · 04/11/2018 11:23

Seems standard round here for back gardens to have trampolines, I don't think anybody would get anywhere complaining as there are so many.

jaychops · 04/11/2018 11:27

@pinkyrose can't go into details as it would be too outing, we don't know them well but previous owners had a few issues as have other neighbours. Let's just say they are opinionated about most things!

OP posts:
pinkyredrose · 04/11/2018 11:46

Why don't you and next door get rid of the trampolines if they're causing problems for so many people?

jaychops · 04/11/2018 12:34

It's not the trampolines @pinkyredrose it's other things, nothing to do with us. But as I said I've just come here for some specific advice re. trampoline so don't need to give any other info really.

jaychops · 04/11/2018 12:35

And it's only those specific neighbours, everyone else gets along perfectly.

I moved mine to keep a neighbour happy and that worked fine actually as a compromise. Thankfully I don't have it any more as the children stopped using it.

Legally there is not much a neighbour can do.

Collaborate · 04/11/2018 17:59

They can't make you move it.

RamblinRosie · 04/11/2018 21:45

OP I worked for a Local Authority, in a post allied to Planning and I never encountered any restrictions relating to trampolines. They are not a Planning matter, nor would Environmental Control be interested.

Your neighbors could send you a solicitor’s letter, but I would ignore it until they quote what legislation applies.

I wouldn’t bother talking to a solicitor, there’s no need.

Kids being noisy and looking over your fence is not an offence.

I’m over 60, no kids, with trampolines in the gardens on either side, occasionally I wish the kids had a volume control, but I accept that it is all part of living in a community. I get on really well with my neighbors.

If you want peace and privacy, find a house surrounded by fields!
