Successful claims for delayed flights?

We flew yesterday from Scotland to the Canary Islands. We were 3 hours 25 minutes late leaving and arrived 3 hours and 50 minutes late. Rather then landing at tea time and being at the hotel in time for dinner, it was midnight before we arrived with three very grotty, cross children.

The airline gave no explanation for the delay other than "the incoming aircraft was late". Yes weather wasn't great yesterday but other flights to and from the Canaries were on time.

So we're thinking of making a claim under EU rules. Is it easy and what do we need to do? We've kept our boarding cards.

Claim under EC 261 (Denied Boarding regulation), your airline should have a claims section online. I claimed successfully for a 24 hour delay three years ago, the airline also compensated me for clothes I’d had to buy and my taxi home (we were stuck in JFK all night). I got the full amount (600 Euros), 12000 flying miles and the other costs. Good luck!

Really easy. I claimed from easy jet. Their was a form on their web site - 250 euros for the delay.

Thanks. Looking at the flight distance it's over 3000km so the figures say €400 per passenger. Will do claim when we get back. Not planning on claiming expenses as we didn't have any extra costs because of the delay.

I used the MSE Resolver tool. Paid up in about 10 days. Absolute doddle.

We had a flight delayed from Newcastle to Bristol with easyJet in the summer. Was pleasantly surprised how straightforward it was to claim. Did it online on a Sunday and had a confirmation email back within five minutes that we were entitled to compensation and it would be transferred to back within 14 days. It was. We got back more than we had paid for the flight!

My friend and I both got about £300 back after an 8 hour delay stuck in Dubrovnik airport while a pilot flew to Yorkshire and back to get a functional plane! Each letter we sent was replied to with a reason why we couldn’t expect compensation but we countered each one as per advice on Money Saving Expert and eventually (took about 18 months I think but tnis was about 4 years ago) got compensation. It was with Jet2.

We have been trying for two years with Small Planet Airlines and they made a small offer but have ignored every email since!

It's a big travel company. The crew were very careful not to say why the flight was delayed which leads me to think it falls under the "their fault" rules. If it had been weather or strike action, or some other factor which meant it was out of their control and no compensation due, I'm sure they would have said.

I've got 500 quid out of Ryanair for a four hour delay, under the EU law mentioned, although they actually owe me 600 so it's ongoing CF-ery. It took about 10 weeks and some nagging.

Resolver is your friend. Very clear and straightforward tool. I used it for painless PPI checking too. All I had to remember was my old addresses not account numbers.

Just coming back to this thread to say we've been awarded our compensation :-) Delighted.

Process was SO easy. Filled in the form on the complaints section of the tour operator's website, gave the flight details and booking number and that was it. After a week I got a "we're looking into it" email and then today the compensation is awarded.

Very straightforward and I'd encourage anyone in the same situation to try to do the claim themselves than involve a claims company who'll take a huge percentage.

Now, where are we going to book for next October half term....
