Housing Association eviction

Hello. In 1996 I moved into a Housing Association flat after a friend of mine offered me the place. Since then I have been paying rent to the HA, under her name.

About two months ago I received a letter from the Housing Association addressed to her, indicating that they understood that she was no longer living at the flat, and planned to evict her. I went to the HA and explained the situation, and the length of my tenancy as an occupier. The employee for the HA told me that they have no obligation to rehouse me and that they would be proceeding with the eviction.

I have now received a letter confirming this decision and providing me with two weeks to respond. I have spoken to Shelter, and they have advised me to get a caseworker, but I wonder if anyone here has any advice. I would like to stay in the flat if possible, since I have lived there for 22 years. But I would also be happy if it were possible to make a case that the Housing Association should transfer me to alternative accommodation.

Any advice much appreciated!

Firstly I'm not a social housing hater. I grew up in social housing when it wasn't fit for animals. Secondly it is subsidised, where do you think HA get their money from? I have no problem with subsidised housing for people who need it. Thirdly, when did it become okay to commit fraud?

It is NOT ok to commit fraud I never said it was As you seem to have a bit of trouble with not reading threads that dont suit your agenda this is from the linked Dispatches thread.

In answer to your question "where do you think HAs get their money from?

Johndoe10 Very wrong. This will not go in her favour.

@Bicycletheif housing associations get their rent from rent payers or are you assuming all people who live in social housing dont work ? Hmm As for rent being cheaper than private rent , my rent is £10/week cheaper than a similar private rent not hundreds like a lot of people on mumsnet assume .

HelanaDove No agenda, I'm all for social housing, no problem with people being supported. I just want people to play by the rules because those that don't deprive others who do.

This housing is subsidised, other people who buy and rent make this possible. That's where the money comes from and this is why there's a long waiting list for these properties and the probably one of the main reasons why the OP stayed on.

As for HA, they invest this money and make more money. It is right to question whether or not they are delivering on their primary responsibility for providing social housing for those in need but breaking the law is not the answer either. There are many things that are wrong but we can't pick and choose the laws we follow since the biggest impact of not doing so is on our fellow citizens and not those who lead. We can lobby and try to change things, it is possible.

I can read by the way even though I was bought up in social housingWink

AamdC the HA have made the biggest proportion of their money through the housing market. Those who part buy and pay rent and who then move on and have to pay back at market value. Secondly through restructuring their operations with HAs collaboration.

If this wasn't the case then councils would be doing the same.

No Helena. One of my neighbours was in a similar position and was rehoused by the HA, but there were extenuating circumstances.
