No photgraphic ID

I have neither d licence nor passport as I do not drive and cannot go abroad at the moment. I was recently turned away from a job interview as I did not have these (though subsequently I got one without any ID apart from ni no and references)
What else could be used to confirm ID? Birth cert? Council tax?

Can you not get a provisional Licence?

ZeroFuchsGiven · 11/09/2018 10:52

Birth cert and council tax can't really be used as id though, they could belong to anyone.

Do you know anyone in a position of authority eg solicitor, teacher, judge, policeman, company director? You could get a photograph authorised as a true likeness of yourself, in the same way you would for photographs for applying for a driving licence/passport. A solicitor's firm would make a small charge I'd imagine no more than £10-20. I'm sure this would suffice in conjunction with other documents as to proof of identity and address?

Unfortunately companies are now liable to check that you do have the right to live and work in this country, the onus is on the company to prove they have checked your credentials.

Presuming you are a British citizen:

UK Birth and Adoption Certificates

British citizens may also demonstrate their permission to work through their full UK birth or adoption certificate which includes the name(s) of at least one of their parents or adoptive parents, together with an official document giving their permanent National Insurance number and their name issued by a Government agency or a previous employer. The General Register Office has published a Guide to Birth Certificates which provides advice on UK birth certificate security features, possible fraud indicators and sample documents.

A birth certificate and a tax letter have always worked for me in the past

Enko · 11/09/2018 12:15

You can order a pass card they are recognised as photo id.

ADastardlyThing · 11/09/2018 12:29

For employment it's a full (long) birth certificate and something official with your ni number on so a p60 or letter from HMRC

Driving licenses should not be accepted by any employer as ID,as odd as that sounds.

ADastardlyThing · 11/09/2018 12:32

a passcard is not acceptable ID for employment (or shouldn't be).

Just in case anyone else sees this thread and invests in one!

The government website says that: "British citizens may also demonstrate their permission to work through their full UK birth or adoption certificate which includes the name(s) of at least one of their parents or adoptive parents, together with an official document giving their permanent National Insurance number and their name issued by a Government agency or a previous employer."

TBH though, I'm not clear on whether an employer can choose to insist on photo ID regardless.

An employer can insist on whatever they want. However, they must check that employees have the right to work in the UK by checking documents on a prescribed list. So, for example, they can accept (or even demand) your driving license for their own purposes but they still need other forms of identification for right to work purposes.

CitizenCard is good and cheap also

ADastardlyThing · 11/09/2018 15:49

Citizencard no good either!

worridmum · 11/09/2018 20:57

Yeah the only photo ID acceptable these days (if UK citizen i mean) is passport or Driving license (though for some reason places are not accepting provisional anymore i don't know why)

Fatted · 11/09/2018 21:00

My mum recently had to fork out for a passport purely for ID. She's never driven and hasn't been abroad for years.

prh47bridge · 11/09/2018 21:26

Driving licence is no good if you are trying to prove your right to work in the UK. If you don't have a passport you need your full birth or adoption certificate plus an official document from the government or a previous employer giving your name and NI number.
