ear infections on holiday

do we have any redress do you think?
We were in Spain, paid to go to a beach club, 3 out of the 5 who used the pool there got ear infections, 1 of them (an adult) required hospital treatment as the infection and the pain was so severe.

We made contact with the beach club while still in Spain. Although they started off by conversing with one of the adults involved now that he has asked for a refund or our bill to go towards the medical fees, they have stopped taking calls and are not responding to any e mails.

We paid quite a lot of money to enter the club and eat/drink there plus money for three doctor appointments, three lots of medication and the last 6 days of the holiday were really spoilt.

your thoughts please.
TIA

How are they responsible though? Ear infections aren’t contagious are they?

We believe that the swimming pool water wasn't properly treated and that's how they got ear infections

That would be incredibly difficult to prove. A lot of people get ear infections from swimming.
Your medical costs are covered by travel insurance

LoveManyTrustfew · 28/08/2018 19:54

Good luck with that. Hmm

Icequeen01 · 28/08/2018 19:54

I always get ear infections on holiday and, in fact, was on holiday in Cyprus 3 weeks ago and had to visit a private medical centre as I was in pain and due to travel home the next day. I claimed on my travel insurance. I doubt you would have a leg to stand on trying to claim from hotel. Water and heat are perfect for ear infections!

SeaToSki · 28/08/2018 19:55

If they got an irritation, inflamation or infection in the outer ear (otis externa), you might have a leg to stand on. An actual ear infection occurs behind the ear drum in the middle ear (otis media) and is an internal infection and cannot be caused by scummy water.

I think you’d be much more likely to get an upset tummy from untreated water than ear infections.

thanks for the replies.

Thanks op. I just meant it might not be the pool, a bit suspicious and annoying though.

Forget it and move on.

If the adult who needed hospital treatment had got it treated sooner then it wouldn't have got so painful.

mckenzie · 01/09/2018 07:36

The adult went to the resort doctor as soon as he realised he had a problem and when he realised that the medication he’d been given wasn’t working and the pain was unbearable, he went to the hospital. The very next day. I’m not sure how he could have acted any sooner.

Do you not have EHIC cards? Why were you paying for medical treatment in Spain?

CountessVonBoobs · 02/09/2018 11:12

Ear infections are usually a complication of a viral infectious illness like a cold. And they're internal behind the eardrum, not external.

Ear infections are common. You haven't got a leg to stand on. Let it go.
