RENT arrears / court/ bailiffs?

Anyone know anything about this. I dont want a lecture as I know I should have sorted it sooner but I have been highly depressed. I owe rent arrears to the council on a previous property. They want to take me to court for it (about £3000) I think They might have already taken me to court. What will happen? can the bailiffs take my stuff? What can I do now?

You need to contact the CAB OP, they can offer you the right advice on how to proceed and could also help to liaise with the council about a repayment plan before it gets to court.

I hope you manage to get it sorted.

Op, have you received paperwork? If a court hearing has occurred, you should have been informed.

As the PP has said, contact CAB. If you have no assets, and debts that are impossible to pay off (although rent arrears sometimes may be included) a debt relief order may be suitable option for you. If you owe less than £20K and have no more than disposable income of £50 per month, after a year debts are written off. It costs £90 which you can pay for in installments.

If the debt has reached bailiff stage, you will have had a letter that states so. You do not have to let baillffs in.

What is your current situation?

Oh really? thanks for that I had no idea.

I left my property because my ex partner was harassing me and moved in with my mum, The council place was still in my name whilst I got housing help to be rehoused (ex was violent) but the council were refusing to rehouse me. I won in the end and got a priority move but it took alot of time and alot of help from an independent housing charity. Whilst I wasnt there they charged me full rent on the place for not living there. And refused the write it off. I made an agreement when they moved me that it would be taken out of my benefits which it was, then my benefits got stopped so it was no longer being taken and thats when they applied to court. I am on benefits as a carer atm as my child is disabled. The arrears happened 3 years.

I'd be making an appointment with CAB. They will contact any creditors on your behalf.

Are you in receipt of all your entitlements?

Have you had any letters from bailiffs?

You can contact the council direct and make an offer of payment, £5pw for example on grounds of hardship. Bailiffs prefer not to take your things so if it is with them now offer them the arrangement, even if you say I will look at reducing it in 6mths time. Alternatively get CABs help thought be quicker to action it yourself.
