Refused alcohol in Marks & Spencer's?

frankiesamson · 26/07/2018 19:42

My husband just got refused buying a bottle of wine in Marks & Spencer is, at the age of 38!

Whilst he took it as a compliment.. (he hasn't been Id'd in years!) we both were just wondering randomly where the law stands with this in the UK?

I used to get asked all the time. I don't think being a short arse helped. It used to be really annoying. Until I got to 40 and it stopped totally. It was quite depressing, I must look old now 😥

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 26/07/2018 20:43

I’m hot, grumpy and miserable.

I cannot even imagine being refused wine in the shops. There will be murder and a Netflix original series about it.

Luckily I’m clearly over 25, so never going to happen.

MamaLupine · 26/07/2018 20:47

I had to carry ID until my early 30s. Then I had my second child. She aged me about 20 years in the first 4 years of her life. Now I think people are shocked when I tell them my age as I look so bloody haggard.

borlottibeans · 26/07/2018 20:52

I was asked for ID in M+S last weekend! First time in years - I'm in my 30s and greying. Perhaps they've just done some refresher training or are having a crackdown and making the staff nervous?

SavoyCabbage · 26/07/2018 20:52

My dh got asked for ID from the Ocado driver a couple of weeks ago and he’s 46. Dh thought the bloke was joking and was making no attempt to actually show and ID. Luckily when the driver saw me he was happy to release the alcohol into my safe hands.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 26/07/2018 20:54

I'm 30 and got ID'd to buy scissors in the Range a few weeks ago.

HollowTalk · 26/07/2018 20:56

I hate to link to The DM but this balding bank manager was refused a PG film. His assistant, who had ID with her, was refused it, too, in case she gave it to him. Grin

ImAGoofyGoober · 26/07/2018 21:01

I was refused a can of red bull the other day, I’m 30!!

NicoAndTheNiners · 26/07/2018 21:04

I got ID’d last year at 40yo. Frequently asked up until my mid 30s.

Some people look young, some shop workers aren’t good at judging age.....they’re just trying to do their job and not get fined.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 26/07/2018 21:05

For God's sake, why should a 38 year old man need to carry ID to buy alcohol? Whoever asked him is an idiot obviously.

purplecorkheart · 26/07/2018 21:08

I am 36 and regularly get asked for id. M&S are fairly strict with ID in Ireland in my experience. I always get asked there. I an guessing they do mystery customers or something so staff don't take the chance.

AnExcellentUsername · 26/07/2018 21:16

Gosh, I don't know... perhaps OP's husband looked young to the person that asked him for ID and they were... doing their job? Because this kind of thing is taken VERY seriously?

4cheekymonkeys · 26/07/2018 21:18

I worked on a checkout as a teenager, it is so hard to judge age and someone I worked with was fined £1000 because the police sent someone in to test the system and they sold it to them when they were 17. They only worked there as a Saturday job.

4cheekymonkeys · 26/07/2018 21:19

Also just look at the posts on here when someone puts a picture on and asks people to guess their age. The range of ages suggested is usually huge!

mininionsteve · 26/07/2018 21:26

I used to work at M&S and part of the training is to look at people of different ages and decide whether they are the correct age. Obviously it's done to catch you out so you know how important it is to check. They regularly have people checking up on you and if you are caught not asking you are the one breaking the law. It's not worth risking it if you aren't sure.

OurMiracle1106 · 26/07/2018 21:28

I was id’ed at 29 for ibuprofen 🙄 I actually has staff photo id on from Work and it was lunchtime.

I fortunately Had ID

I remember being 12/13 and buying ibuprofen and paracetamol and no questions being asked.

ohnofootballagain · 26/07/2018 21:38

I got asked for ID from Asda when buying wine. I laughed and thought he was joking -I said 'no are you having a laugh - of course I'm not showing you ID' and carried on packing. It was only after this I saw him hesitate and push a button on the till. I do look young but it was a week before my 50th - I don't look that young!!'

MipMipMip · 26/07/2018 21:40

I remember many years ago, when Think 25 first came out, being on a night out. One person got IDed. Yep, the only one who was well over 25 and so didn't carry ID.Grin

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 26/07/2018 22:11

AnExcellentUserName, well seeing as he was TWENTY YEARS over the legal age to buy alcohol, they are indeed, thick.

AnExcellentUsername · 26/07/2018 22:53

Fuck off coffee.

triangulator · 26/07/2018 23:00

I do actually find it a bit offensive. Not gonna lie.

At 33 with my two kids in tow I have once been refused alcohol. I am well over 18, and indeed well over 25. I don't look like a 24 year old and I certainly don't look a bloody 17 year old!

I personally don't see it as a compliment.

underneaththeash · 27/07/2018 21:58

I've been asked too in our local Sainsbury's, I'm 43...and although I think I lol okay for my age, I don't look under 25. He was clearly new and confused and since I didn't have any ID with me we had to call the manger over who laughed ☹️.

PersianCatLady · 30/07/2018 23:14

Any shop can refuse any sale at any time

frankiesamson · 16/08/2018 16:56

Persian, that's not true. They can't refuse service based on race.

I can’t beat the paw patrol cutlery, but DH who has 30 years buffer to the cut off age had a problem buying the Tesco meal deal last week, which included a bottle of wine, because 12 year old DD was with him. The cashier tried to card the dc.
