How to change my name

GreyStarz · 22/07/2018 09:10

Just looking for some advice. I want to legally change my surname. I changed it when I got married and now massively regret it and want to go back to my maiden name. Anyone know how to go about it? I would need to change my passport, bank, driving licence etc.

Also has anyone else done this before and where family etc. understanding?
Bit nervous about people's reaction to the idea!

Thanks

You can change it by deed poll. It's a relatively simple process. I just went to the website and ordered the form. Then you fill it out and send it back. It cost about £30. There's quite a few different websites so make sure it's the right one. You can then use the new deed poll to change all your other documents.

Just use this - freedeedpoll.org/
You don’t need to pay anything.

Statutory declaration - less well known by the public than a deed poll, but it was the method of choice for a lawyer I know who changed their name.

You can do a free deed poll.

Or you can just start using your maiden name again. As you will have a birth certificate in your name it is much easier.

Start with your passport, once you have that most places are happy to change.

I've done both.

Anyone can declare by deed poll to change their name as pp say.
But when researching changing my name last year I found the easiest and least hassle way was via a solicitor.

Authorities like the passport, council, HMRC etc like to see official documents so £50 for a solicitor to make and sign an official
change of name deed document is well worth it. (I got 5 copies inc.)

I (and a friend) both found the passport office was fine with the free deed poll, other places were a bit more 'er is it official' but showing passports in both names they sort of couldn't argue.

This is the correct advice.

Everyone else is talking shite.

5makes9 is also correct.

Just as you didn't need to do a deed poll, or anything, when you changed to your married name, you don't need to do anything to go back to your original surname. Just start using it.

WeAreEternal · 22/07/2018 12:34

You don’t have to do a deed pole change, you have every legal right to use your maiden name so just change your official documents back, your birth certificate is enough proof to do it.

wowfudge · 22/07/2018 17:17

Agree - I did the same after my divorce. Cost me nothing.

GreyStarz · 23/07/2018 08:42

Thank you all so much, I will get my passport changed using my birth certificate and go from there. Excited to be able to use my name again!
