Are there any benefits legally to be married if one of you dies? Just wondering....

I'm going to have a chat with him this weekend. I'm not into big weddings but being married does seem to make complete sense.

Don't count on a will to protect you as his biological siblings, parents and grandparents can contest it and you'll still be left with nothing.
This isn't really true. If the will is properly executed this is highly unlikely unless there has been coercion or some other irregularity.

Some pension schemes will only pay spouse pensions if you’re legally married - even writing a will won’t change that.

It's amazing the stuff I had no idea of. Makes you wonder why people don't get married if they knew all this.

Also sometimes it is not sensi ble to marry eg I would not marry again as I have a fair bit of money which I want to go to the children. In fact I don't think I'd even move anyone in now and this is protective of mmy money, my income and my children's inheritance (but most women aer not in this position - however divorced people often are - a life time's equity in a house and they rush to remarry and their new spouse gets his or her filthy mits on it on the second divorce).
