Can I be asked to pay different rent amount to what the tenancy agreement states?

The agency sends email reminders for rent which states my share (joint tenancy) which all looked fine so I paid, but have just been questioned about a shortfall Confused.

So I checked all payments against what the contract asks and the tenancy agreement lists rent payment dates along with the amount. The amount the agency asks has always been a few £ more, not enough for me to notice at first.

Am I right to say it's what the signed tenancy agreement states or can they ask for a different amount based on what they have on their system? If they've used old figures it's their fault and they'll have to asborb it won't they?

If you agreement states specific amounts on specific dates then they are wrong unless you have been properly notified of a change. I'm no expert though.

I've just been told it's been someone else pays less because the room is smaller?

I thought joint tenancies can't stipulate how rent is divided?

If you are joint tenants you are all responsible for the whole rent, not just your portion. The landlord is entitled to pursue any one of you for the whole amount. They could collect the entire amount from you, leaving you to pursue the others for their share. If the person in a smaller room is refusing to pay their full share the landlord is entitled to collect the shortfall from you and the other tenants. Your best way forward is to take this up with the person in the smaller room.

Ah yeah that's fine, I have no problem paying. Just thought it was weird that there was a difference in rent on a joint tenancy as I knew there is no such thing as a "portion".

Thanks
