Finding out a date of death

This is on behalf of a friend who lives abroad.
He was NC with his father but following a feeling he should make contact, he spoke to his half sister (same father, different mothers) in early 2010 and she told him their father had died intestate in 2009.
His father owned a property in England, jointly with a long term partner. His sister told him the partner had to go into a care home and that the local council had laid claim to the property in lieu of fees.
He has recently asked his sister whether the partner is still alive and whether there are any funds left over from the property. She has not replied and gone NC!
He has done some digging himself and thinks he has found an obituary for the partner which pre-dates the date he was told his father died.
He is suspicious and although he realises any money is long gone, he would like to find out exactly when and where his father and the partner died and whether there was a will.
I have found reference to a will in the right name with the probate Registry but the date of death is 2011, so it is unlikely to be that one.
What we really need is a date of death but the General Records Office records seem to only cover deaths up to 1957. Commercial sites only seem to go to 2007 or only have 55% of records (Ancestry UK).
Does anyone know how/where we can find this date of death? Friend is going to send me the full name and date of birth and I know roughly where he died (assuming the sister was telling the truth about that!)
I am probably being stupid but I don’t want to be paying for certificates on my friend’s behalf without being pretty certain I’ve found the right record.
Interestingly, the property is a mobile home and it appears not to have been sold since 1995, probably when his father and the partner bought it.
Many thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Ask the registrar at your local births marriages and deaths. They are generally very helpful. You could also check the local paper online for an obit.
