Changing my name by deed poll

TimeForMy10thCuppa · 02/06/2018 18:17

Has anyone done this? I recently got married and would like to get rid of my middle name and take husbands surname. I have been googling and there are lots of places that do it and charge various amounts but apprently i can just print off the words and change it just like that without paying a company. I dont have a passport yet, but have a drivers licence. Would this be accepted? I am so confused. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi you don't need to change your married name by deed poll. You only need marriage cert. for your passport etc.

A solicitor can draw up a change of name deed very easily for standard cost. Phone a couple locally to check the cost. Do you need to change your middle name and are you sure you want to? I changed my name by deed poll before I was married. I now have to send the original doc. and marriage cert. every time I do something legal and it's a bit of a pain in the neck. As an aside, my mother was mortally offended that I'd removed my middle name and I ended up giving it to my daughter to placate her!

Don’t you just use your marriage certificate? Drop using your middle name.

I have a deed poll but it was a change of name rather than due to marriage.

Use you marriage certificate to change your surname and just drop your middle name.

TimeForMy10thCuppa · 02/06/2018 18:38

That sounds rather simple. Would i still have to add my middle name to legal documents. Would it still appear on my drivers licence/ passport? Deffinately sure i want to get rid of it. Its my fathers name and we were no contact.
If its as simple as above, do i now just use my married name? Im sorry if these are stupid questions, i have no idea how this works. I signed the marriage certificate as my maiden name. But can now offically use married name?

It is simple really, you can just drop your middle name and legally use your married name, although you will need to present your marriage cert. for change of bank account etc.

TheIsland · 02/06/2018 18:57

Here. I’ve googled it for you.

If you do a deed poll make sure you use the free way, don't spend anything on it.

You have to sign the marriage certificate as your maiden name, everyone will have done. I got married last year. just use your married name from now on. It's worth ordering a copy of your certificate so you can send them off to multiple places to make the change, otherwise it takes an age (driving license, bank accounts, car insurance, I still haven't got around to everything myself yet)

As for middle name. I know some peoe who sign their middle name, and some who don't even have it on anything. If it had to be on your passport, honestly who would actually see it?

Thank you all. I really really do not want the middle name, i hate seeing it on official things and puts me in a bad mood. I wish i had removed it before i got married. When i say my fathers name, i mean his first name. Not his surname. I have seen the link for the free deedpoll, is that accepted by everywhere? I meant to ring dvla and ask but forgot.

I eventually changed my name legally after being a "known as" for ages because people used to get really arsey about it, work for example, banks, credit cards etc etc so I had a solicitor for something totally unrelated and he just drew up the document. Think it was less than £50.

It was a very long time ago but my passport, driving licence etc are all in my new legal name and I have never looked back.

The deed poll thing is meant to be official so I can't see why someone wouldn't accept it. Married surname, you just send off a copy of your marriage certificate but to drop your middle name (like I did, and I completely changed my first name) deed poll.

I know people say but it is only on your passport, but if it gives you the rage why would you keep it?

I was fortunate that everyone I know, including my parents and siblings called me by my new name.

@TimeForMy10thCuppa

Yes I've used the free deed poll. It is accepted literally everywhere. Places I have used it include dba, passport, DVLA, various benefits, tax etc, Santander bank, utilities, Halifax etc.

But print off about 10, using literally any photocopying paper.
