Loss of details

Large well known travel company took my name and phone number to text me with new flight details (they cancelled original flight whilst we were at airport) Sat up waiting on text all night, called airport next day and was advised of new flight details.

When got to airport I asked why I hadn't received text. They advised they had lost the piece of paper with details on it! WTF! I am seriously unhappy and with the new DPA laws I feel this is unacceptable. Can I ask for compensation? If so how much?

I don't think you are I reasonable to be annoyed (although I wouldn't be losing sleep over it)

Of course you can ask for compo but let's be honest, why do you feel you deserve financial compensation?!

As they broke the law! Not one apology or anything. Already lost a day of my holiday and am worried about who has my details.
I'm naturally very anxious (am medicated for this) so this has me stressed out no end

Best thing to do is keep it in perspective. It's what, your name, phone number and some holiday details that someone probably chucked in a bin?. Nothing bad is going to happen.

Under GDPR you are entitled to compensation if you have suffered material or non-material damage as a result of a breach. There are no court rulings on the new legislation as yet. However, you have not suffered any material damage and I doubt you would convince the court that you had suffered sufficient non-material damage to justify compensation. You may be entitled to compensation for losing a day of your holiday but that has nothing to do with data protection.
