Hello,

Has anyone here been through this or know someone who has?

I have a question about the length of time it took and the costs involved.

Thanks!

I handled things privately with my ex - would that be a possibility for you?

I wrote a letter that my ex took to a solicitor to have sign (so it was witnessed) and included information on how I intended to facilitate his relationship with the children.

It was all done and dusted within the week but he hasn’t maintained his side of the contact agreement. For some men it’s very much a case of ‘out of sight, out of mind’ which is something to consider.

Hi MaitlandGirl unfortunately not.

Think restraining order, domestic violence, control freak, manipulative, hardly seen child anyway..... argh!

Oh what a nightmare! I was told 9 years ago by my solicitor that it would cost about £2-2.5K and could take up to 18mths - it all depended on how the background reports took.

Obviously it would have cost less if I self represented.

Hi, I'm a family solicitor, you may be eligible for legal aid if you have/have had an injunction, depending on your income.

If not, I would say 12 to 18 months and upwards of £2k depending on where in the country you are.

Also will depend on the age of the children involved and the level of contact with the other parent.

If he's having no contact at all I would say you'll be ok representing yourself, but it might mean coming face to face in court.

Sorry, thinking and watching DD at same time so this is a bit disjointed!...

Make sure you have real plans e.g. budget, place to live short and long term, schools, ideas on how to promote other parent, not just a vague notion of moving somewhere.

Thanks wejammin for the details. I have sent you a PM to ask some specific questions....

I'd expect privately paid costs to be around £10,000 for a fully contested application.

And even then it might not be granted or granted with terms like he gets them for all the holidays where you have to pay for all the flights involved.

I had a case were they wanted to move to New Zealand for parents A husbands new job, but parent B saw them regularly but could not afford the expense of seeing his children in New Zealand. Parent A basically said if he wants to keep seeing his children he could emigrate as well.

The judge ordered that ALL school holidays were to be with Parent B and that Parent A had to cover ALL flight costs and in the end parent A did not go as she did not want to not see her children for 6+ weeks and could not afford the expanse of so many flights (but expected their dad to stump up the costs).

But Collaborate is in the right ball park for the costs with a fully contested application.
