Damaged furniture replacement - retailer refuses pickup from the flat

I've bough a piece of furniture online, which was delivered to the kerbside. I was aware of that when placing an order. We live in a flat on the second floor in a building with no lift. The item's weight is nearly 10stones and it is 6ft tall, so it wasn't exactly easy to get it to the flat. Once we unpacked the item, it turned out that there was a massive chip in it. I've notified the retailer and they agreed to replace it once the item is back in stock. I've requested for the replacement item to be delivered to the flat and the damaged one taken away, however they are refusing saying that it is kerb side only and I need to get the damaged item to the kerbside myself for the driver to pick up. Does anyone know what my rights are in this case as I'm struggling to find any detail online?

If they would only deliver kerbside then I cannot see why you would expect Collection to be any different?

There is likely only one driver doing delivery so wouldn't be able to move it alone.
Also he won't be insured to go onto your property.

I've previously had furniture delivered to a similar flat, and even as a lone woman accepting delivery they wouldn't move the item from kerbside.

Well it's a breach of contract as they have not delivered an item in an appropriate condition. So you can theoretically claim your extra costs back from the retailer. For example if you need to employ a couple of lads or ladies to move the item for you, they are liable. It'll be a lot of hassle though. Ask them to knock something off the price for the hassle factor.

Thanks for your comments. As I said, totally fine with having to carry the item upstairs ourselves first time, but not when it comes to taking the damaged item downstairs for them, if the damage is manufacturer's fault.
