Can the stores within (national chain) not pay their employees and enforce leave / no pay as it was not their choice to close ?
Situation of a friend of mine .

Payment depends what your friend's contract says. If it allows for staff to be laid off without pay they can be unpaid. If it doesn't the store will have to pay.

They can't force staff to take it as leave unless there was sufficient advance notice - twice as long as the closure. So if the closure was for one day they would have to give staff at least 2 days notice that they had to take it as annual leave. If they didn't give that much notice they cannot force staff to take it as leave.

It would be paid if the store closed themselves as that’s her contact . But they are saying the shopping centre forced the store to close . But the shopping centre don’t employ her , the brand does and she’s nothing in her contract about that .

It doesn't matter who decided to close the store. Unless her contract says that staff can be laid off without pay she must be paid.
