A question re 'Grant of Administration'

My lovely Dad died, unexpectedly, last week leaving no will. His estate won't be worth a lot, way under inheritence tax thresholds, but still a fair bit. I'm an only child (the named beneficiary on all pensions etc), he's been single since he divorced my mother in the early 90's. My Grandmother is still alive. He has 1 large HMRC bill, 1 for BT for the last quarter & this months rent. Everything else is UTD. We intend to pay them all. My question is in these circumstances do I actually need to apply for a Grant of Administration? Googling & looking on the .gov webiste is only confusing me as there are a few different amounts quoted (I'm normally fairly intelligent I promise but this has knocked me sideways) the .gov website gives a telephone number but all it says is look at the website & every option just leads to automated message. I would really appreciate a straight yes or no answer.

Sorry about your loss Flowers

Not an expert and someone will be along who is but I think it depends on whether the financial institutions you need to deal with require one. Eg will his bank deal with you without one

The pensions it’s definitely not a requirement for

I'm going to PM you

As Pleasebeafleabite says, it depends on whether you need a grant of representation to get the financial institutions to deal with you. It isn't to do with how much he left. If he owned land, property or shares you will probably need a grant. If he didn't you may not need a grant but his bank or building society may insist on one.
