Solicitor's letter

I received a solicitor's letter asking me to consider something on behalf of their client. I responded with an holding letter saying I needed more time to consider. I didn't state how long I needed and I still have not replied with a consideration. I was expecting a prompt from them but haven't received anything further. It has now been six weeks. I don't really want to get tangled up with anything and would much rather leave things as they are. Can the client take other course of action without my knowledge.

Not enough detail but of course they can.

The other side doesnt need to ask your permission to do something.

6 weeks though doesnt sound like solicitor is on the ball.

I would think it's likely that the solicitor was paid for writing the letter and passed your response on to their client. Unless the client tells them they aren't going to chase you, and even if they do their letter carries no more legal standing than if their client wrote themselves.

It is a family dispute which I wanted to sort out in an amicable way. But as the other person wasn't getting their own way entirely they proceeded to a legal resolvement. I have been told that I can consider to give way fully or their client reserves their right to other options of getting their own way. I haven't heard anything since sending my holding letter. I am hoping that they have decided not to take up other options. I don't want to rock the boat by asking if their client has decided not continue, I also doubt if their solicitor would tell anyway. It might that the client has just decided to leave things and if I respond I will be stirring a hornets nest.
