Old tenants new landlord chasing me to check reference

Can anyone help- I had some tenants in a small flat for 2 years. They were generally good tenants but at the end of the tenancy when given notice said they couldn't afford to pay and we agreed a payment plan.

I have them an honest reference saying property was kept to a high standard and explained rent was up to to date until the last few months.

Since they moved out they've been abusive to me on emails and threatening me to get out of paying what they owe.

The referencing company have emailed me to follow up on their reference as they are not paying rent to their new landlord. They want another reference from me. After all the hassle and abuse I've received from them since they moved out I'm glad to be shot of them and don't want to be dragged into anything with their new property. Do I have to reply? I am worried they're trying to make out I gave a false positive reference to try and sue me.

I would send exactly the same reference you sent before. You know nothing new about them as remnants as you're no longer in contact.

You could even add 'I am unable to provide a more up to date reference than this as they have not been by tenants since X'.

Thanks for the advice. Since I provided the last reference the tenants have gone back on a payment plan with me but that's not something I need to go into with this company I don't think? Is it best to not reply at all or just say "please refer to previous reference"?
