Don't know if it right place to post but
I've been sent a jury citation but I'm a self employed sole trader, would I be able to apply for an excusal on the basis that it would cause me financial hardship.

I did jury service about 15 years ago, I absolutely loved it, got two interesting cases. I wasn't self employed at that time, my employer an international steel company paid me full wages, however the financial compensation was pitiful, the traveling and food allowances did not cover the costs, we had to use the court canteen and weren't allowed out of the court at lunchtime.

Account, must be 20 years when DH was first called, he worked for local council and loved it.

Being self employed now with 2 DC's and sick DW, it's changes everything.

Hoppinggreen · 24/12/2017 10:55

scotch yes you do have to return bits IF you actually got the NON RECORDED DELIVERY letter.

MrsGrindah · 24/12/2017 10:59

Hopping Grin what could you possibly mean?!!

brizzledrizzle · 24/12/2017 11:04

I deferred and was told I'd be called again in 12 months time. That was 20 years ago.

PinkAvocado · 24/12/2017 13:03

Midnite-teachers aren’t exempt anymore and almost anyone can now be called (someone said to me they changed it fairly recently). If you can’t go in term time, you have to defer and give all available dates within the next year (so holidays basically). I honestly don’t know how small businesses and unemployed manage.

MidniteScribbler · 25/12/2017 10:59

Pink Avocado, I'm not doubting that's the case in the UK, just stating that teachers and small business owners (amongst others) are exempt where I live.

Innermagic · 27/12/2017 14:39

I asked for excusal, got a letter back saying unfortunately I can't be given an excusal at this time but I'm on the list for excusal and to phone 48 hours before to see if I'm needed.

Unfortunately this doesn't help as I can't book in any clients in case I'm not excused. Wish I just pretended I'd never received any letter, seems a lot of people ignore it completely and there is no follow up.

Where you able to claim back any monies? DH won't be able
to book work either.

ohfortuna · 27/12/2017 15:17

bummer :(
they really need to make jury service less punitive dont they
I was excused on health grounds, no dr's note requested

PinkAvocado · 27/12/2017 18:04

Oh that’s rubbish. It doesn’t seem fair to be made out of pocket.

ChickaaaaannDipppaaaaassss · 27/12/2017 18:12

Agree with a PP.
I've been called up 3 sodding times! what non recorded letter
I would have been screwed over if I had gone :(

BubblesBuddy · 30/12/2017 02:07

My DH was excused as a self employed person. That was years ago and he’s never been asked again. His daily earnings were way above the amount given and he had staff to pay as well as office costs. Losing huge amounts of money just was not fair. They were understanding but as more and more people are self employed I guess getting people will be more of s struggle.
