Can mum change birth certificate without dad?

My friend registered the birth of her son a week ago. Her ex husband was present and is named on the birth certificate. Baby took dad's surname. Can she now add her surname without the dad knowing/being there? Is there a grace period for changing babies birth certificates?

Also, if they go to court to arrange custody, will this affect her getting a mortgage approved, I.e. If it's still going through the courts at the moment she's applying for a mortgage.

Just want to give her some useful advice.

If he's on the birth certificate then he has PR and therefore she will need his permission to change the babies name.

Ok, thank you. I wondered if that was the case. So she'd just get turned away from the registry office?

Do you know anything about the mortgage question?

No grace period and she'd need the father's permission to change the surname - www.ukdp.co.uk/name-change-birth-certificate-england-and-wales/

Re the mortgage stuff, she needs to speak with a solicitor and a mortgage advisor so she can get the correct advice for her specific circumstances

If she's not divorced yet, and/or has recently had any joint accounts, debts etc with her ex then that could affect a mortgage application. If she is now divorced and no longer has any financial link to him or joint bank acc then she can apply to have him removed from her credit file, she needs to contact equifax and/or Experian. There'll be a form she'll need to fill in to have him removed.
