I have just received my new contract and am a bit concerned by this section, does it mean i won't get paid anything for the first 3 days I am ill then something like £100 a week for the rest of any illness?

Yes. You get ssp after three days absence.

But it says there is a possibility of them giving you sick pay which is rather odd ime. You usually either have it in your contract you get it or not.

SantanicoPandemonium · 04/10/2017 19:21

Sounds like you'd only be paid ssp as standard, but in some circumstances there would be company sick pay paid. Usually company sick pay is your normal salary for a certain number of days, but its discretionary, not mandatory.

SantanicoPandemonium · 04/10/2017 19:22

My employer has a similar term, but sick pay is nearly always paid - the clause is there to weed out skivers and give management a way to discourage unnecessary absence.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 04/10/2017 19:25

Yes. Industry standard when you work in care like I do!

Ttbb · 04/10/2017 19:28

This is pretty standard for nannies. Are you working as a nanny or in a similar role?

PassiveAgressiveQueen · 04/10/2017 20:42

no a senior engineer, earning over 40k.

It's stating you're entitled to SSP only, but OSP may be paid on a discretionary basis.

One point that is misleading is the waiting days. Waiting days do not apply if you've been in receipt of SSP in the preceding eight weeks, so you don't necessarily always have three waiting days for each absence. I expect it is just poorly written, payroll will know how to calculate SSP.

poorbuthappy · 04/10/2017 20:55

Unusual at that level.

PassiveAgressiveQueen · 04/10/2017 21:01

poorbuthappy yes I have never seen anything like it before.
The unusualness is worrying me are they a really shitty company to work for? is this a portent for how they treat their staff? Etc.

Is it a small company? I'm a HR consultant for SMEs and this is completely standard in nearly all of the companies I support. Often they use discretion to pay more though. When I have worked for public sector or large corporates the sick pay is much more generous.

PassiveAgressiveQueen · 04/10/2017 21:12

redmimi it is quite a large company 500+

Standard but odd for what would be deemed a decent job for a decent company. Most places would at least pay 1 month full one month half.

CycleHire · 04/10/2017 21:16

Small company I used to work for had this. Unusual for a big organisation I’d have thought.
