Historic Abuse

Name changed for post. I have finally reported the historic sexual abuse I was subjected to as a child. If he is charged, what is the likelihood of him being held on remand (he is an old man now). And how long would it take from charging to court. He still terrifies me and I just want him locked up so he can't hurt me any more.

Unlikely to be held on remand unless he is a flight risk or will interfere with witnesses. They will take his computers etc and it can take months for them to be evaluated.

Report any concerns to the police and see what they can do for you.

As giveortake says, unlikely he'll be remanded unless any of the above apply. Speak to the police. If he is arrested and charged it may be possible to add extra bail conditions.
From summons (equivalent of charging if not arrested/on bail) to crown court trial was 6 months in my case. However it took over a year from first report to police to decision to prosecute. (Including almost 6 months for CPS to decide if they were going to prosecute)

It all takes so long... I regard myself as "lucky" to get guilty verdicts in the end, but it is a long stressful process. Happy to answer any questions you may have about the process :)

In my case it has been over a year since my reporting it to the police and the CPS haven't yet made a decision although the police have said that all the evidence so far suggests it is very likely it will go to court. My abuser has been continually bailed every few months with conditions that he must not attempt to contact me either directly or indirectly and he has to report to the police station weekly. It is a long process; it was explained to me at the time that the police have to give priority to cases which are live which I understand, and the detective dealing with my case said he literally works on it whenever he has a spare 10 minutes or so. It is frustrating but I am keeping positive.
