PA, Mortgage, and the Data Protection Act

I work as a PA and my employer is often overseas, or very difficult to get hold of. I have access to all his personal and company information, bank accounts, passwords etc. He is applying for a joint mortgage, with his wife, and asked the bank/ mortgage consultant to deal with me. They have refused. In fact, they told him that they had to speak to him directly and couldn't even speak to his wife. They have also told him that they can't accept emails from his PA.
He's pretty frustrated about this; usually he just authorises people to deal with me directly. I even fill out application forms for him! His wife can't help, even if they agree to dealing with her as a joint applicant, as she has nothing to do with his business (she has her own).
Is there a piece of legislation or something we can wave at them so I can get on with his half of the application? It's going to take weeks if we have to keep waiting for him to forward emails between the bank and I.
We both understand that they have obligations under the Code of Mortgage Lending Practice and the Data Protection Act but does this really extend to not being allowed to ask a PA for last January's bank statement?

Thank you!

If this is not signing on his behalf then why not just set up a gmail address [email protected] and send it all through such as copy statements with his name and address at bottom.

In law there is no reason someone external cannot send copies of documents as far as I am aware (if the first person has consented - it is no different from HMRC or a bank sending someone documents about a customer) but someone will have set up a system with strict rules I suppose internall, so might be best just to comply in that kind of way just like I suggest. I am not saying lie that you are him but he and you could share this new email address. It is not used to sign documents or anything like that but just to pass documents to the lender (and you could set it up so both you and he see everything else).

When I was a PA you could set up your email in outlook so that you could send emails from your managers mailbox. You would simply put their name in the "from" box. You do have to go into the options somewhere to get the from box to appear and your manager also needs to give you the relevant permission otherwise it says "sent on behalf of". Once you've sent the email it goes into your sent items so you need to drag it to your managers. Seems like the easiest option. You could also bcc your manager when you send the reply so he's completely in the loop.

The bank etc have to follow data protection rules. It's your managers choice what he does with his own data.

Thank you for your replies.
It seems like tweaking the email account might be the way to go then.
