MaryPlain59 · 13/08/2017 19:05

Please could anyone give me the email address of the CEO of Legal Aid? I have tried Googling but I can't find it.

Do you mean this guy? www.gov.uk/government/people/shaun-mcnally

I doubt government email addresses are given out publicly.

BootCampSucker · 13/08/2017 19:17

Try firstname.surname (as above) @legalaid.gsi.gov.uk

MaryPlain59 · 13/08/2017 19:37

Thank you both very much for your help.
I am hoping to sell my house but on the Deeds it says there is a charge against the property that has to be paid when the property is sold, have you any idea who I could find out more information about this from? The charge was put on 30 years ago after my husband died and I think I was too distressed at the time to retain the information.

Confused What's Legal Aid got to do with that? Just get the deeds of Land Registry for £3.

dertyyuoih2 · 13/08/2017 21:19

Land registry apply for your deeds

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 13/08/2017 21:20

That has absolutely nothing to do with legal aid Confused

EmmaC78 · 13/08/2017 21:23

If you still use the same solicitors then ask them to check your files. As others have said you can also ask for a copy of the title deed from the Land Registry. It is definitely nothing to do with Legal Aid.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 13/08/2017 21:23

Order up a copy of the title deeds online from the land registry. That will give you details of the charge holder. You can then speak to them directly.

The legal aid board did put charges on properties in some circumstances. Is that why you are trying to get hold of them?

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 13/08/2017 21:24

Here's some info here about charges and why the legal aid board would put one on a property www.gov.uk/legal-aid/eligibility

mumblechum0 · 14/08/2017 09:36

So you have a debt for LA which needs to be repaid? It'll appear on the office copy entries which you can find easily online at HM Land Registry.

It used to be called the Statutory Charge.

Lucysky2017 · 14/08/2017 12:59

Yes, sounds like what MC says. A lot of people think legal aid is a gift from other tax payers. In fact it's often a loan secured against your house which once sold means we the tax payers get paid back from than the person who used state resources being able to avoid the debt.

You say the charge was put on "after your husband died" - do you know the exact date - eg was it just after he divorced his first wife and he owed legal iad board money? If put on after he died then surely it must relate to a debt of yours not his?

MaryPlain59 · 14/08/2017 20:27

I ordered my deeds last week and it showed a charge against my property which is why I was trying to contact Legal Aid to see if it is a debt to them and how much I need to pay. I have tried to trace the solicitor who dealt with my case but he has retired.

Lucysky2017 - I know I did use the Legal Aid myself after my husband died so am happy to pay it back now, not sure why you are mentioning my late husband being divorced etc, I think you must have mixed me up with somebody else.

Thank you very much to all of you who posted such helpful advice, it is much appreciated.

Sorry I meant to say that it said on the deeds that there is a charge on the property for Legal Aid, that's why I was trying to contact them to find out the amount so that I can pay it.
Many thanks again for your help.

What is the wording of the charge on the land registry document you downloaded? It should say who the charge is in favour of.

MaryPlain59 · 14/08/2017 20:41

It says there is a charge to my solicitor at the time giving his name and address and to Legal Aid.

BritInUS1 · 14/08/2017 20:45

Why do you need to contact the CEO?

Just call Legal Aid 0800 085 6643 and ask them how much you owe

MaryPlain59 · 14/08/2017 20:50

I have learnt from years on Mumsnet that sometimes it is quicker to go straight to the CEO so that they can pass the query on, I tried to phone them all last week plus I have emailed with no response so I thought I would try the CEO as I am waiting to sell my house so would like to get this resolved as soon as I can.

OP posts:
Syc4moreTrees · 14/08/2017 20:52

Get a solicitor, the CEO isn't going to know anything about this

titchy · 14/08/2017 20:57

That's what you pay your conveyancing solicitor for surely?

BritInUS1 · 14/08/2017 21:12

Well if you are in the process of selling your house this is something your solicitor will deal with x

TipBoov · 14/08/2017 21:14

This is for your solicitor to sort out, they'll have dealt with this kind of thing before.

YouCantArgueWithStupid · 14/08/2017 21:27

Surely going straight to the CEO means they'll just pass it down?

Lucysky2017 · 15/08/2017 07:37

I see. So you had a legal aid loan after your husband died. That was secured in the usual way by a charge on your house and when you sell the house you pay back the legal aid board. It all sounds in order to me and perfectly normal.

MaryPlain59 · 15/08/2017 07:56

Who said it wasn't Lucy? If you read my posts it clearly says I know I owe an amount to Legal Aid and I am just trying to find out the amount that I owe so that I can pay it.

30 years' worth of interest at 8% - ouch!
