Contesting rental agency charge

I rented a car while on holiday in America a couple of months ago, and when I returned found that my credit card had been charged an extra £100. When I called the rental car company, they said this was for roadside assistance. When I picked up the car, I had only asked for one extra to be added onto my rental, and declined everything else including roadside assistance. The rental car company have sent me a copy of the signed rental agreement, in which roadside assistance is listed as "RSN". Obviously, I thought "RSN" was the other extra I had asked for when I signed the agreement, but obviously not, that extra isn't even listed on the rental agreement.

The rental car company wouldn't talk to me any further about it, so I called my credit card company to contest the charge, and they gave the rental company 45 days to provide satisfactory evidence. I guess they did not do this, as the cc company have withdrawn the payment. Now I am receiving letters from the rental car company in America saying that they will pass my details onto a debt collection agency.

My question is, what shall I do now? Does this affect my credit rating? I feel pretty strongly that I shouldn't have to pay for something which I didn't ask for, was assured I had not bought, and wasn't aware I had. On the other hand, it's only £100 and I don't want bailiffs knocking on the door.

I would copy the lot to the credit card company strongly objecting to being harassed

Second I would get a solicitor to write to the car hire company pointing out that harassment can lead to penalties and you are quite prepared to see them in court in the UK where their offence has taken place..
