My gran is 95 nearly 96 and recently been diagnosed with dementia.
She is a council tenant and normally pays her rent at the corner shop opposite her house.
Obviously she is getting worse now and today we got a letter from council saying she is in breech of her agreement as she owes £16 ...
If she doesn't contact them then they will start legal proceedings for repossession.
I've literally ran to the shop and paid the £16 plus 2 more weeks of rent.
I've sent the housing officer a email explaining the dementia and that I will set a d/d from my bank account for the £8.00 a week rent
I apologised again and said that the dementia has recently got worse very quickly.
She suffers from hallucinations but obviously she's forgetting me.
I'm worried sick now..

this will be a generic letter. It will be computer generated for anyone who misses 2 weeks rent. So don't worry.
It's frustrating as there is no human element in the process but don't panic.

Her rent account is now £20 in credit
Hopefully everything will be ok if they take into consideration her age and dementia

It'll be fine, honestly. It's just a standard letter.

Does she have carers or a family member who can look after the bills and things for her?

There has to be a court order before they can evict her. And if they do so without any court order. They're breaking the law.
No judge on The British Isles will give the go ahead for an 95 year old dementia sufferer to be made homeless and certainly not over a measly £16.
She obviously need some one to Attorney, now though.

It may be too late for power of attorney except by going through the courts.

They aren't going to evict - although as always I remain staggered by the threats that councils can make that would get a private landlord done for harassment.

Meanwhile please please get in touch with the Alzheimer's society who will be.able to give guidance on the help needed. For instance , if there is gas or an electric fire she is at risk.
