Hiding where I live etc

So moving (back) to UK after leaving violent (and generally abusive) ex. Local police were no help so he has no record etc. I'm concerned that he will find me after I move. What can I do to hide my address here? I've lined up work and looking for places to rent now.

I would ask a private investigator, I imagine they would advise, and they aren't that pricey.

Thanks! I'll look into that. Would never have thought of them. Looking online, seems most detail is given on the electoral register or telephone book, so avoiding those seems best. I wonder if there is a register of leases or if gas providers etc would list me somewhere? No idea if UK police would be able to advise as all crimes against me were outside of UK?

You will need to be on the electoral register, make damn sure you are not on the open one and speak to the council about being hidden from the main one too. Your landline provider can make you ex directory, you will still get scammers as all numbers are recycled but a call blocker deals with those!

I'm not sure if I can be hidden on the electoral register because I have made no complaints against him in this country?

Anyone can be on the non public electoral roll. There's a public version and a non public one. You just let the council know your preference when you register

Great. Thank you.

I think you have to have a police reference numb etc to keep it hidden on electoral roll.

I couldn't get that for various reasons.

So my way of protecting myself is -

  1. Don't register to vote (luckily paying council tax isn't affected)
  1. Check www.192.com and it will show you how easy it is to find people as they collate their info from the electoral roll
  1. Google yourself every now and then and see what info comes up.
I do a 'security sweep' every few months...learnt to keep my social media profiles completely private, stopped commenting on articles on the online newspapers Grin, am careful of what pictures i share online (FB photos can appear elsewhere on the net even if they're marked private in FB)

4 Stay tuned to your intuition and gut instincts - if something feels 'off' don't ignore it.

  1. Have someone you can confide in/talk to. I suffer from anxiety and am also very intuitive - it's a tricky rope to walk Grin

You can opt out of being listed on the open electoral register and telephone listings. Why do you fear he would go to the trouble to track you down?

specialsubject · 07/12/2016 18:35

192.com uses the OPEN register, not the main one. Stay off the open register, otherwise your full address gets on 192, findmypast and loads of others.

also stay off social media except under pseudonyms.

Redglitter · 08/12/2016 16:49

ThisThing You don't need a police reference number. You can still be registered to vote but not appear on the voters roll.

I don't appear on any searches or 192. Com and all I did was tick a preference box when I registered

Bloomed · 09/12/2016 00:05

Thanks for the advice. I have limited internet access at present but I'll look into all this. Will definitely keep on googling myself too to check what comes up.

Consider changing your surname for official purposes (bills, electoral rolls etc). A pain, but it can make it more difficult to find someone.
