Is this fraud - who has responsibility?

A friend of mine was bought Sky TV as a Christmas present from his employer. She put it in his name, although she paid for it by direct debit from her account. He has now left this employment and his employer has cancelled the direct debit for the Sky TV - all perfectly understandable.
However, my friend used to live on-site at work in tied accommodation so left the Sky TV in situ - it wasn't his responsibility as he had never signed up for it. The employer left the Sky active for a month before cancelling the Direct Debit and re-directing the outstanding fee to the employee. Now Sky are chasing him for unpaid subscriptions, but he didn't ever sign for anything - it was a gift that he had nothing to do with. The employer is notoriously unreasonable and unapproachable so he can't discuss it with her- how does he resolve this and who has responsibility for the outstanding fee?

He should just write and aet out the facts. He never entered into a contract with them and she provided the consideration (ie payment) not him.

Thanks Allthebest. I was of the same opinion.

Who made the agreement? Who paid the bill? He did neither of those things, so shouldn't be held responsible.

Yes write and explain situation and provide them with the details for the ex-employer. It is ex-employer's responsibility.

Thank you all. Very helpful and pretty much what I had thought. The ex-employer has form for extracting money from employees for unasked-for things they had believed were given as gifts!
