Multiple Citizenship in the UK

Not sure if this is the best place to post as it is not a legal dispute, but I just wondered if there are any restrictions on UK citizens who are also citizens of other states.

Are they allowed to serve in the armed forces, for example? What if conscription were to be reintroduced?

I think MPs are allowed to hold multiple nationalities, right?

Just interested, as the attitude to multiple citizenship seems to vary so much across the world. Where I live for example, dual citizens are exempted from military service (yay!) but are also not allowed to serve in the armed forces or be a member of parliament or head of state. I think they are allowed to hold ministerial posts.

There was a rather unpleasant debate about "purity of blood" when devising a new constitution a few years ago, but I think the debate has subsided now.

What is the UK position?

"Are they allowed to serve in the armed forces, for example? What if conscription were to be reintroduced? "

Conscription won't be reintroduced.

But if you mean can dual nationals and foreign nationals serve in the British military, then the answer is yes and they do.

Yeah, i realise that conscription won't be reintroduced, but was just wondering what the position would be if it were theoretically to happen.

I could find information about being a Commonwealth citizen and serving but nothing about being a UK national with another nationality, which is different.

Thanks Collaborate, I realise that dual nationality is permitted in UK law, just not whether this has any repercussions in terms of legal status or occupations that may be closed off, as it does in the country of my other nationality.

My uncle was born in France and was an officer in the RAF for 7 years.

However, this was during WW2 and the RAF's attitude to him in peace-time was another matter. Despite being born in France, he held a British passport as at the time of his birth his mother couldn't give him her French nationality.

As a dual national (born and brought up in this country, I lived, and gained citizenship of another commonwealth country), my understanding is I can be called up for military service in both countries, although as a female, there's still the issue of women serving on the front line. Also at almost 44 and very unfit, I'm not sure either country would want me.

I believe I can still be an MP in either country should I wish too. I don't! I'm really lucky to have dual nationality, and to live in either country with the other country not having a problem with it.

Conscription will not come back in the UK

Dual nationals can serve in the armed forces and serve in public life

THe UK is pretty chilled about all things dual national
