Speaking to a solicitor - nervous first runner

I've never had the need/opportunity to have an appointment with a solicitor before and I'm not sure how it's all supposed to work. What do I need to know/do?

Should I make appointments with several solicitors and choose one? Should I bring paperwork I have relating to my issue with me or will they only want those after I start being a paying client? How much do solicitors charge for things. Is this going to cost me an arm and a leg?

The first consultation is free but what is discussed and am I committing myself to large costs after that?

My issue is I don't know whether I need a divorce, an annulment or whether I have a void or voidable marriage. I got married abroad, but there are doubts as to its legality, though I have no proof and I'm reluctant to contact my scary 'exh' (haven't seen him since 2003 and not heard from since about 2008)
He claims we're not married, no records were filed. It's a country where you'd expect the bureaucracy to be that sort of crappy and where bribes will fix anything. but I want to marry my lovely dp, so presumably need to prove I'm not married and the translated document the passport agency have for my passport married name change is actually not worth anything.

Or when I register to get married this year, do they even need me to prove I was never married despite the name change?

That should read: nervous first timer, not runner. I'm not a fugitive.
