do you get sent a copy? How would you know if you were left something?

No you don't get sent a copy of the will (though you get get one - they're public documents). The first you'd here would be a letter through the post from the executor, or someone (usually a solicitor) acting for the executor.

Thanks for replying. It's my Grandmothers will I'm thinking of. My Dad was executor and I was told what was left to me but not in much detail, I was never actually given the items, and would love to see what the will actually said. If I get a copy will he know I have asked for a copy?

You can search probate records for England/Wales online here www.gov.uk/wills-probate-inheritance/searching-for-probate-records

It will cost £10 to obtain a copy of your dgm's Will and the Executor, in this case your df, will be not be informed of your application.

Thanks for that goddess. The will was done in Scotland though. It's just interesting to know if it is possible that people could not be aware they have been left anything, for example if the executor could choose not to inform them.
