DHs relative died leaving entire estate inc house to his mother. (Scotland btw). DH is executor for elderly lady. Financial advisor friend thinks I'm mad considering doing confirmation myself (the estate is worth approx £270k inc property). I was going to get solicitor to transfer title deeds (£700 cost) and write to financial bodies myself will will and death cert. the property value can be estimated through right move & zoopla.

Does anyone think I'm mad for considering to do this?

Thanks in advance for your help

We have administered a large estate ourselves - the deceased specifically asked for no solicitors to be used - most were fine, when we needed a short term loan from the bank they insisted on a solicitor (despite it being the bank where one of the executors had banked for over 20 years ...) which was a pain. But everyone else was fine, as long as they had the forms, a copy of the death certificate and a copy of probate they were happy (England).

Your DH may have to get probate though, fill out the forms and go for the "interview" if its the same in Scotland.
