Builder and cheque problem

We employed some roofers and they have caused us a lot of problems and have soaked some of our ceilings.

They said they were going to do some rectification works that we had asked for but then turned up on Saturday for a cheque without doing the rectification works and said they'd be back today to do them.

We gave them a cheque in partial payment and said we would withhold the rest until the work was completed to our satisfaction.

Had a call today asking for a new cheque as they had put the other one in the wash.

I know i could cancel the cheque and give them a new one, but if I had paid cash i wouldn't be giving them fresh cash if they'd put it in the wash and they've been really incompetent and unhelpful about putting right the damage they have caused. Am I under a legal obligation to give them a new cheque when I've already paid them one just because they are incompetent muppets who put it in the washing machine? I assume I am I just wanted to know the actual legal position. I was wondering if it was legally a different position from a cheque 'lost in the post' because i have witnesses who saw me physically hand the cheque over to them.

(I'm not usually like this it's just because they've ruined my lovely new house I'm really annoyed!)

You'll have to issue them with a new cheque, but first cancel the one they say has been lost (sounds fishy to me). Make sure you've held back more than enough to get someone else in to rectify it.
