Can I get a paternity test if I am on the Birth Certificate?

The baby's mother and I are not together, and as such i am not on the birth certificate, although we have agreed to re register him so that i will be on the certificate. What i am worried about is the fact she has something of a reputation for being promiscuous and although she says she is 100% sure i am the father, i know that there could be a chance I'm not. Now I'd love to be the father, I've spent time with him and hes amazing and i also feel like i am more than likely the father, but i don't want to be raising and supporting someone else's child, and basically being used for my money which many people I've spoken to seem to think. now the reason I'm asking this question is, despite it seeming a bit backhanded, it seems like the only way to get a pat test as she hasn't consented to one when i asked before, which struck me as odd given that shes so certain i am the father. So if we do re register the child, and i am on the certificate, can i demand a paternity test? THIS IS NOT A WAY FOR ME TO GET OUT OF SUPPORTING THE CHILD, I WANT HIM TO BE MINE BUT I JUST NEED TO MAKE SURE.

I am far from an expert on this and hopefully someone who knows more will be along to advise, but from my PoV do not (or stop if you already are) paying maintenance until the mum has agreed to a paternity test . I know that this can be done through the child maintenance people. Ideally though, tell the mum you want a test, if she refuses I think you have your answer. If you are already paying, put the money in an separate ac and hand it over as soon as you have a positive result !. If she will willingly do this it can be done very quickly privately and it is in her interest to do so ! It won't cost her anything.

If you are prepared to pay for a test, you can have one at any time you want but you would have to be the legal guardian (ie named on birth certificate) in order to have one without the mother's permission. However, if that DNA test then proved that you weren't the father, you would be able to apply to have your name removed from the birth certificate. I really hope that things work out for you and that you are the dad.

If she won't agree to a pat test you have to ask why.
