Q about applying for British citizenship

I've lived in Britain for nine years, initially on a working holiday visa. I then met my (British) DH and switched to a spouse visa with limited leave to remain. When this was up I applied for indefinite leave to remain, which I've had ever since. I know I'm eligible for British citizenship, but have never applied due to the cost. I'd like to do so now, but am a bit stumped by one of the requirements. I need to show I've been paying NI but I haven't - I haven't worked for three years since my child was born. I can't seem to find information anywhere about what I can do. Does anyone know?

Where does it actually ask you to show that? I got citizenship 2 years ago now - similar to you I came on a working visa for 2 years then married and stayed on for years etc- but at the time I got the citizenship I had not been paying NI for several years. I did have an NI number as had previously been working before having children. I cant remember any questions asking me to show I was paying NI.

I think I had to provide copies of some papers from HMRC. Maybe you can contact HMRC about proving that you don't owe any tax - I think they just wanted to check I didn't owe the taxman any money.

Have you done the Life in the UK Test? That was the worst bit for me!!
