changing passport to maiden name after divorce

Hi...not sure where I should post this? I am now using my maiden name after a divorce. I have an appointment next week at the passport office to change (&renew) passport. They say they need decree absolute showing both names, but mine only has married name? Also, they want a signed statement to show I use my maiden name now. Do they mean from a lawyer?

I am loathe to pay for a deed poll to revert to the name I was born with, but surely a statement from a lawyer will be £££?
I have my original birth certificate, and a copy of the marriage certificate (the court retained the original).

Any help or advice appreciated please.

Thank you so much.

Google change of name deed. That's all you need. Forget the nonsense of deed poll.

You need birth certificate, marriage, decree absolute and a statement saying you will be known as ms maidenname from this day forward.

I managed to do it without the decree absolute or the marriage certificate! Must have got through on a loophole.

The statement I did wasn't witnessed by anyone, but I guess they want that witnessed now, which will cost you a short amount of lawyers time!

Google on gov.uk for name changes and passport renewal.

I changed my name with the passport office without a decree absolute (or nisi) or a lawyer's letter or anything. I just sent my marriage certificate and a letter written by me saying I would be using my maiden name. I'm not divorced and I don't have a lawyer, so I wish anyone asking me for those good luck Wink However, I didn't need anything to change everything officially and unofficially.

You never lose your name upon marriage, so a deed poll is not required.

There was a very long thread on here about it a few weeks ago which you can search for.

I changed mine and my son's name to my grandpa's last name and Deedpolls are FREE! go to [www.freedeedpoll.org.uk] fill it in print on standard A4 paper and you're done. They accepted mine at the passport office.
