Freeholder refusing to trim trees blocking our windows

I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice. I live in a flat in a converted house. The building next door to us is also flats and both buildings share a communal garden to the rear of both properties. In our property all owners share the freehold. The other property is leasehold and the company that owns the lease of this building also own the communal gardens. There is a large conifer tree (the trunk is only a few metres away from the rear of our property) in the communal garden which is directly in front of our lounge window. It blocks out a lot of light and one of the branches now touches our window. It also severly restricts the amount of natural light in the flat below us. We have approached the owner of the freehold (of the neighbouring building and garden) but they have refused to do anything (they did recommend we get a pair of scissors and trim the offending branch). Does anyone know if there is anything we can do?
