Can you own a television set without a tv licence?

The tv licence has just become something I can't afford. I don't get much income as a student and I have decided it is too much. Strangely, at the time I probably could have found the £150 to pay it outright but £29 a month is taking a lot out if my salary.
I presumed this must mean I had to sell my tv, or have the tv clearly not in use. I have no where to store it at all. However the cab have told me I can have it even on the tv stand as long as I am not watching tv.
I hopeful to be able to afford the licence when my situation improves a I don't want to sell my tv yet. I would get much less than I paid for it if I were to sell it.

As long as I watch no tv can I have a tv in my house on a tv stand. I will I plug the aerial.

Found out I pay £29 for six months and it covers me for the year. I do remember setting up the direct debit. That's not as bad as I had thought and I have already paid 6 months so I am covered for six more months. I have now cancelled my tv license direct debit for six months from now.

Actually I may say I no longer want a tv licence and can they refund me my credit for next 6 months

£29 for six months is not right.

Aga I pay more as it's the first 6 months of the TV licence. I also pay that amount for 6 months and then nothing for another 6 months

Oh, I see you meant £29/month for each of six months. That's a bit too much I think.

Make sure you also remove the implied right of access to your property.

AgaPanthers · 03/07/2014 16:53

I don't think that's necessary, just tell them to get lost if they come to your door.

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/07/2014 19:52

I had 9 months refunded to me, I paid yearly and the 4 series of the thick of it was a bit pants so I cancelled.

You will be liable if someone else watches live TV on your TV in your home, though. You need to stop that from happening or keep the license.

i've never paid for a tv licence - and they can kiss my backside cos i'm never going to pay for one either. i used to ignore all the letters they sent. a few years ago one of them turned up at my door asking about the licence,at that point in my life i didn't own a tv set and he didn't believe me,actually asked if he could come in and see for himself! errrrr.....NO! he then asked to look through my window instead (i had netting on the window so he couldn't just see in) and again i refused. cue the letter threatening legal action-which went in the recycling bin. they didn't take legal action because they had no evidence i was watching tv.
they are not allowed to enter your home without a warrant and no court is going to give them that

So can I just confirm this if you don't watch live TV you don't need a license?

I never watch things as they're broadcast I record them on my sky+ box and watch when it suits.

So does this mean I can cancel my monthly payment to them Shock

Collaborate · 04/07/2014 06:54

Recording live tv is the same as watching it, so you need a license.

overmydeadbody · 04/07/2014 07:03

TV licenses: the only thing where you are guilty until proven innocent.

OP remove and dispose of any cable to connect the tv to the areal or box or whatever you need (I don't know, we have no TV). Than anyone else in the hose can't watch it either.

No redglitter sorry, having the means to watch live tv means you need a licence.
