I think you can do it yourself for free link.

onetiredmummy · 11/06/2014 09:37

I did it a few months ago, its about £45 but I did it for £15 through Groupon plus £10 for 5 copies.

Really easy :) I think you can do it for free but there were some threads on the MSE forum complaining that some of the free ones were not accepted by banks/DVLA etc

TheMuppetsIsWhereIShouldBe · 11/06/2014 09:45

Free!!

No idea why people pay for it!! Google free deedpoll and print!

TheMuppetsIsWhereIShouldBe · 11/06/2014 09:46

Freedeedpoll.org.uk Is the one I used and was excepted by dvla/passports office/ babes etc

It doesn't cost anything. DH changed his surname, you just start using the new name. The only thing DH did actually pay for was a letter from his solicitor so that he could change his bank details.

nomoretether · 11/06/2014 09:51

Absolutely free. Read this. It explains there is no official website, no official company, no official stamp despite what the banks/passport office/DVLA might try and tell you. They just put it on fancy paper and put an "official looking" stamp on it.

I changed mine myself using a free website 6 years ago on cheap everyday paper and have never had a problem using that document.

weatherall · 11/06/2014 09:54

It's free.

Don't pay for these rip off sites.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/06/2014 10:10

I do like free things...if dh changes his surname does mine change automatically to mrs new surname? (Probably not)

It would have been easier to just do this on our wedding day wouldn't it?

I'm a lawyer and I can tell you that it's free.

However, if you want the deed poll to be registered at court then there will be court fees ( about £100) and a much lengthier process to go through. A separated woman will also need her husband's written consent to revert to her maiden name ( or any other) if you use this route.

The only advantage to having it registered with the court is that then a copy of the deed is stored in the National Archives and can be searched for and copies obtained ( for a fee). The major downside ( for most people I speak to about this) is that details of the name change including your full name and address are published in the London Gazette. As people ( esp women) often change their names to distance themselves from an abusive partner then this route is somewhat counterproductive.

Avoid the sites charging a fee for this service ( they are the same as those charging for passport applications and European Health cards).

If you want to change the name of a minor child you will need the written consent of all parties with parental responsibility.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/06/2014 10:24

I did worry about publishing it in the London paper, I'm NC with my parents but I have family in London & it's not like either of my names are common Sad.
