Intended Prosectution - impact on my car insurance cost ??

I have received a letter from the Met Police advising me that I have committed an offense whilst driving: excessive speed, and this will result in a fine or a requirement to attend a Speed Awareness Course.

Would anyone know if I need to let my car insurance provider know about this and if this will impact my annual premium ?

If it's fine/points then you do have to tell them

If awareness course then technically not but it's becoming a grey area. I wouldn't though Grin

Depends on the insurer. Some want to know about Speed Awareness Courses, some don't (i'm assuming you'll do that not take the fine & points - all will want to know about the points)

Ours - Admiral - haven't changed our premiums even though we have both done the course in the last three years, after DH rang them and talked to them. We are long term customers who insure 3 cars with them so pretty good customers though.

I would always let them know, but it won't necessarily increase your premium. The premium is impacted by a number of factors, which can vary by insurer, but if you have been driving for some years, with no previous speeding offences, and you weren't driving excessively fast, it probably wouldn't increase your premium.

tell your insurer. If you don't then you will not be covered if you have an accident. And then you will find out the true meaning of expense and trouble.

Thanks for all these replies! The message 'tell your insurer' does come out loud and clear ! I will hope to 'get' the course and pray my insurer does not increase my premium ...

I do my insurance online, I cant say Ive ever seen the option to disclose a speed awareness course, convictions and points yes but never for a course.

I did one last year too, my insurance renews in aug and unless it asks for that info, it wont be given!!

specialsubject · 03/06/2014 18:12

quite right, OP.

here's what GOCompare say:

www.gocompare.com/car-insurance/speed-awareness-courses/

words to the effect 'you broke the road traffic act and you need to tell them'

I agree that it doesn't seem to be on the online forms, but the best bet is always to clarify. Companies all have different criteria.

sotiredtoday · 03/06/2014 21:11

Thanks Specialsubject, that GoCompare page is really helpful.

At this point in time I am quite resolved not to speed ever again ...

I know someone who didnt tell them. A few months later her car caught fire and burnt out. Insurance company refused to pay out as she had 3 points they didnt know about so said her insurance was invalid.

VivaLaBeaver points on your licence is a different thing to doing the Speed Awareness Course though. DH has recently done one and the question was asked. the instructor said it is asked at every course and the answer is that most insurance companies don't require you to disclose it, the one exception being Admiral. They did suggest that people checked their own policy wording however.

on the note of telling insurers everything - recently bought a car with a towbar and those stupid alloy wheels. The insurers want to know about modifications. The towbar is an obvious one but what about the wheels?

fortunately there is a site where you can put in the VIN of your Ford and it tells you exactly what was on it when it left the factory. So I know the alloys were factory fit, and my insurer doesn't count that as a mod. Hence only one modification.

it is all quite a performance but it HAS to be right.
