I have just found out that my solicitor went out of business over a year ago. (That's why he has been impossible to contact!)

I didn't get any notification of this and he still has all my paperwork. I went to his office today and there is a For Sale sign up, the business next door said he was very ill prior to closing.

He has some original documents, my dd's birth certificate, my ex p's death certificate and other papers. Is there any way I can get these back?

If you contact The Solicitors Regulation Authority, they should be able to tell you where your stored documents are now. They will be stored carefully somewhere...that's one of the differences between solicitors, and non-solicitors!

As Nappaholic says, all of the files will have been transferred, however I'm surprised you weren't notified by the new firm.

Thanks I'll do that.

There isn't a new firm, he worked alone and the building is for sale. When you look through the window the front office still has papers on the desk and post it notes and such. It's really odd and looks like he just locked up and walked away!

Thanks again , just checked Solicitors Regulation Authority and found this.

If a firm or sole practitioner's office has been abandoned, you need to contact us immediately. Client money and papers may be at risk and we may need to appoint intervention agents to return them to the clients.
