Stressed about tax debt

I am being hounded by letters for a tax credit overpayment from a relationship a number of years ago. They are now talking about legal action.

I paid my half at the time and hmrc assured me I was only liable for half and that the letters were automatic as the account is in joint names but there would be no further action taken against me (I.e they were chasing my ex for his half)

I am very careful with money and keep bills up to date so I'm finding these letters quite stressful.

Does anyone have an idea if hmrc have advised me correctly? I don't want to pay his half but am getting tempted to just stop all of this

Sorry, I should have added that I call them every time I get a letter and they say to ignore them but it's pretty hard to do that with the content of them
