Water companies - do they have a right to enter and fit a water meter, even if it means damage to your kitchen?

We looked into having a meter fitted some years ago but were advised against it by the water company's rep who came to check our house as it would mean ripping out one of our kitchen cupboards.

Now we have been told we have to have one. We're happy to have one but do they have a liability to make good or compensate any damage they do while fitting the meter?

Does it need to be indoors, ours is at the end of the drive under a bush!

Apparently so. It's part of a 4 house terrace and we all share the same pipes.

We have a shared supply, & our water company came to have a look where the stop cock is for the house & as it is at the back of a kitchen cupboard which the bins are in, & therefore would mean being unable to close the cupboard & causing damage to the cupboard, they have said we are exempt from having a meter. I am quite happy about this as I am a childminder & therefore get through more water than a normal 3/4 person family.

If they can't fit a meter, you can be put on an assessed charge instead. I think you should be able to argue that they either make good or identify your house as unsuitable. Assessed charge described here: www.makingeverydropcount.co.uk/information.php

Thank you both, that's helpful. Will have a look at that site too.
