I was brought up by my mother who had me outside of marriage. My father left her before I was born because he chose another woman, with whom he is now married and has a family. I have never had any contact with him although I do recall my mother saying he did pay some child support.

This might sound ludicrous, but isn't it right that I should be able to sue for damages? He lives a comfortable life and has not paid for his actions, other than the obligatory child support. IMO, if you have a child and then fail in your moral obligation to be there for your child, you deserve to be sued. Does the law recognise this?

No. There is no basis in law for a damages claim, I'm afraid.

So he did pay child support? What would you sue him for? Damages for emotional distress? Lots of men (and women of course) don't pay any child support at all so in that way you were luckier than most.

Luckier than many. Sorry, not most. I don't think all NR parents are crap!
