Insurance fraud?

I'm having a bit of a panic that I'm going to be in trouble for insurance fraud and was looking for some advice.

I had a very minor bump in my dh's car a few days ago and it turns out that they hadn't been informed of my speeding fines. They asked me as part of the report and I of course told them all about it, and they have sent details to their underwriters to decide whether to honour the claim or cancel the policy.

I just didn't think about this...I think I assumed that your insurance was informed automatically. I also contacted my own insurers after this to update my own policy and ended up cancelling the policy and have gone to another provider for £15 a month less with the sp30's included!

Do you think I'll be prosecuted? My job and future employment would be at risk if I have a criminal record.

insurance fraud IS a criminal offence, so you'd better do some very fast talking to prevent this going further. That said, as a new insurer is happy to take you on, hopefully the speeding was only slight although there is of course no excuse.

you've been incredibly lucky because you have been driving uninsured. Every time you get an insurance quote you get asked in plain text about any convictions or fines, so I really don't understand how the insurers weren't informed.

it worries me that you say that you have fines, plural. Please, please learn from this.

I got three speeding fines within a year, now drive completely differently...and slowly!

Both insurances have been in place for years and have just rolled over and as I say never gave it any thought.

good - although you don't have to drive slowly, just appropriately!

BTW if the fines were more than 3 (check) years ago they may not be relevant.

Run a quote through with the insurer with all your points on and see if they still quote.

If they do, you may be very lucky and they will honour and charge you the difference in premium.

If they dont quote its likely they will invalidate the policy and you will have to declare to any current and future insurance companies that you have had a policy cancelled by an insurer. Whether they take further depends on them. Thinking the dvla would tell them wont was though as all policies say to declare any changes.

Was anyone else involved in the accident?
