Will Query

My grandad recently passed away, and my mum has now seen the will. Alongside sins to his 2 daughters he also has then left amounts to grandchildren which is where my dilemma is.

I'm the oldest grandchild by a number of years, and my grandad has named, myself, my parter, my brother and my cousin as 4 equal beneficiaries.

Both my cousin and brother now also have live in partners. What my partner and I would like to do is refuse his share and just spit it 3 ways.

Can we do this?

We're not talking huge sums of money - in the region of 20k to split so don't want a costly legal bill. If it would be expensive/complicated could I just give then money by writing a personal cheque after accepting?

Sorry this is long.

If you want to give money away after you receive it, there is absolutely nothing stopping you. But the will has to be actioned as it was written

Firstly, sorry for your loss.
Probably the best way to go is what you have suggested.Executors have to follow the will to the letter (I know I had to go and swear somewhere that I would do so)
A lovely gesture OP......so many would just take the money and run.

A Deed of Variation could be drawn up varying the terms of the Will to do as you suggest so long as it is done within 2 years of death which will be as if the Will had originally had the money split between you, your brother and your cousin

Thanks everyone, I'll talk to them tonight about the plan, & I'll remember to keep my will up to date!
