Single parent - what to do about a will?

I'm a single parent of one young child. Father is unknown.

What do i do about making a will?

If anything were to happen I'd like my sibling to adopt my son and he's happy to do so.

How do I ensure this happens in my will?

See a solicitor or will writer would be my first piece of advice, never try and do a home made will as these can often cause more difficulties on your death.

With regards to your child, in your will you can appoint your sibling as guardian should you die before your child is 18.

Mumblechum (see small business ads) did a really good job for me at a reasonable price.

Flowers thank you Lonecat for the plug for the advert.

OP, as the father doesn't have parental responsibility, I suggest that you appoint your sibling as guardian in your will. The will also covers who looks after your money in the unlikely event that you were to die before your son is 18.

Adoption is a big step and social services would have to get involved and a court would have to make an order.

Guardianship is far simpler, achieves the same end, and only if anyone else claims that they should have your son living with them would there be any court case.
