Took car in for a quote - decided it was too expensive. Now they want £2000 for storage.

My DH was involved in a car accident, and his car was very badly damaged.

He took it to a garage for a quote for a rebuild. They initially told him it would be around £25k (it's quite a rare car) - but the final quote came back as £40k.

We just can't afford that - we will get £25k from the insurance, so that would have been fine.

He has said he will have his car collected from them, as the quote is too high. However, the garage is now asking for storage fees for the time it was taking up space at their garage.

They took ages to get the quote to us - and we took a few weeks to decide we wouldn't go ahead.

I understand that they have been inconvenienced - and agree that we should pay something - but was is reasonable?

My husband offered them £500 - but they've said they will refuse to give the car to him.

Can they do that? At no stage did they say there would be any charge if we didn't go ahead with the work. Also, I'm not sure why we should pay for the time while they were getting the quote to us.

Anyone have any advice about where we stand legally?

Thanks

if they didnt tell you they would charge for storage they cant stop you taking car - they would also need to tell you their storage rates before they would be able to bill you. i would go along with the police to take the car away.

Thanks peggy.

It's difficult. I can see from their point of view - our car has taken up space in their garage. However, if we'd know the charges, we'd never have taken it there in the first place.

Get the police involved.

They just think you're loaded and want a slice.

Contact your insurance company. Most policies have a small extra charge for legal fees, which may cover this type of thine.
